Am v. proud of myself. I perservered and finished it. I just had to. Had to know if my instincts were right. And they were. Guessed the “plot twist” correctly! Now now, I shan’t ruin it for you. You must trudge through this book yourself. But now I know the secret that Iris held for oh so long.
I’ll also be proud that I will probably be the only one at book club who finished the book. This has happened several times. I try to reserve my not reading for something I truly dislike. If I can trudge through it I will. But I’ve scored myself several books not to have to read should we come up with some real duds in the future! I read every book last year except one that was truly lame and offensive to women. We won’t get into that book. There were several last year that I was the only one who read. Go me!
Anyway, my thoughts on BA was that the writer could have made it slightly more interesting. You go through the life of Iris jumping from present to past. You don’t even jump in order. You go from now to 20 years ago to 34 years ago to 22 years ago or some such nonesense. That makes it harder to get into. Then intersperesed is the book that her sister wrote which bounces from some bizarre sci-fi (and this from a person who likes sci fi) to the story of two unnamed people having a sordid affair. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the jumping from one time to another time or one story to the other. So just when you finally get into one it jumps to the other and you almost have to start from scratch.
I’ve never been into reading multiple books at the same time so perhaps this is another reason why this book did not go over well for me. I do not know. But the style was very dry.
Oh well, it is done for now and I can get on to something much more interesting. Hmmm what should it be? Something lighter. Maybe I’ll read Artemis Fowl. Hmmm that sounds very appealing. A nice light story. Something “easy” for me to get into. Not something I have to feel like I’m working to read!

hehe thanks! 🙂 Hope the rest of the book club feel that way! I’m the nerd who reads every book. I have been very careful with the books I have not read/not finished. I try to reserve that for books I really cannot stand. Such as The Bluest Eye. That book was horrible. I just stopped reading it and then got very vocal about it. And then there was We Were the Mulvaneys. UGH.
Anyway, there was nothing disgusting about this book. It was just BORING. I think it was the writing style. But it could have been spring fever combined with war. A great deal of this book was during the depression and was about a bunch of really depressing stuff like people dying.

I have WE WERE THE MULVANEYS. Remember, you advised me “Don’t read it, girl!!”
heh
What’s the BLUEST EYE about??
Oh, yeah, that’s always a fun read. Why do you think I stopped reading GRAPES OF WRATH, and just BSed my way through a thesis on it?? Read 170 pages. There was an ENTIRE CHAPTER on a turtle crossing a street. Gee. Yeah. That’s something I really care about!! NOT!! So, yeah, I got bored, and decided to put the book aside and just write a thesis on what I had read, and made it sound like I’d read the whole book, and got a C on it. Not bad. But there was a lot of fluff in there. LOL I think the teacher caught on that I hadn’t finished the book. ~growl~

The bluest eye is about a little black girl in some rural Ohio town back in something like the 40s. She was raped by her father, got pregnant, lost the baby three fourths the way through the pregnancy and went insane. She thought she had blue eyes like all the white girls and that all the black girls were jealous of her. IT was v graphic and v vulgar. Went into great detail about the father’s sexual excursions. *ick*
Oh *gasp* Grapes of Wrath… *shudder* yet another “What were they thinking” book! Teehee lol abt your paper though!

Yeah the book was just gross. I couldn’t stand it. It was our first book and I tried so hard to read it. But the SECOND (yes the second… once was apparently not enough) time that the author went into details about the father’s first sexual experience (where he was mocked by rude southern bigotted white boys) I put the book down and decided NO MORE. I drew the line. I recommend this book be burned. *SHUDDER* I’m not usually like that… but that book definately. It was one of Oprah’s.

There is a definate pattern to the Oprah books. We read several in a row. Then a couple of us put the kibosh on that. We couldnt’ take it any more. We dubbed it “The Oprah Genre” We decided that we could only do one Oprah book club selection and then we had to have several non Oprah books. *shudder* Really, why does Oprah read such depressing books?
I will tell you, I did read her book “Where The Heart Is” and it was really good! Icy Sparks wasn’t so bad either, it was about a girl with Tourette’s.

I had a copy of it. I kept loaning it out. Just about everyone in our book club about a year and a half ago read it. We never read it as a club but I got it and read it and just kind of passed it around. I’m not sure who all ended up reading it or if I ever ended up getting it back! It was a good one though. Kind of sad because of the tough life Icy led, but at least she wasn’t raped and brutalized and stuff like some of those Oprah books.

Just say no to The Bluest Eye then.
As far as We Were the Mulvaney’s… I don’t remember if it went into graphic detail or not. But the whole book just ticked me off. The way her family just abandoned her after it happened. It disgusted me. I just couldn’t finish it. And she was date raped which struck me as way too close to home. That happens way too often and to people I’ve known. I just couldn’t stand to read the dang book.

WE WERE THE MULVANEYS, as far as I got into it, it didn’t go into too much detail, but the date rape thing…nevermind.

I’ve been known to throw books myself. And curse at books. Haven’t done it recently. Last book I cursed at was November’s book club book. It was INSULTING to women. THe last book I threw was a Left Behind book I believe. But it ended literally with “They looked up and saw a nuclear bomb dropping on their heads” Excuse me? And then what? How are you getting them out of THAT???? It was the second to last LB book. And I knew I had to wait like almost a year to find out HOW the authors were getting the people out of nukes falling on their heads. *CURSES to those authors*

Yeah, exactly. Which is why I threw the bloody book. I think to be specific the anti-Christ dropped TWO nukes… because one nuke is just never enough. *rolls eyes* But since they kept saying all through this book that the place these Christians were going to was going to be safe until Christ’s return you are going “Well nukes or no nukes, they will survive.” But you are left going “HOW HOW HOW HOW HOW” For ONE YEAR. ARGH. See I get riled up just thinking about it. It was horrible of the authors to do that to their readers. Just awful.
I still don’t understand how on earth they survived. The nukes went off. THe people saw it… yet they survived. It was totally weird.
Those LB books are INTERESTING to say the least.

The only programmes I watch (not as much anymore, but slowly getting back into it) is the WWE’s SMACKDOWN! and RAW.
