As the boys grow it is so much fun to find their interests growing as well. At some point boys learn to fold paper and make interesting things. Some boys stop at paper airplanes and paper footballs, but not our boys. After making more planes than owned by Delta Airlines, the boys started making masks and whatever else they could think of.
This of course eventually led to us sharing the art of paper folding with the boys. And thus, the origami monsters were born! For Christmas each boy got a pack of 100 sheets of origami. Also under the tree was a new book with all sorts of fun origami projects. The two boys worked together to create The Origami Army.
Littering our house are dozens of brightly coloured cranes, benches, shields, turtles, and whatever else the boys could make following the instructions. Caramon even began to work on folding a chess set!
A few weeks ago, Caramon’s den leader at scouts told us that the boys all needed to teach a scout lesson for their bear achievement. Caramon chose to do some complex wood thing. Upon further thinking, the idea sprang to my mind to have him teach origami instead since he loves it so much. I checked with his leader and him and they both loved the idea!
I’ve never seen Caramon so excited about anything! He gathered up all his origami creations he could find and he researched and had just so much fun! I purchased some paper for the boys so they could make plenty of things and have paper to take home.
Caramon started his lesson with a story. He gave each boy and his leader a paper boat. Using his own boat he told them how the boat was sailing and there was a bad storm and it crashed around and then all that was left… a life vest! Everyone was so amazed!
Caramon gave a brief history of Origami and then began teaching the boys how to create things. Together the den made: A holy shield, a wallet, a scottie dog, a cobra, and a bench. Caramon also gave each person there a folded paper crane and told the den about the 1000 cranes. If you make a thousand cranes then you will find peace and happiness and the gods will grant you a wish. Caramon told them the story of a little girl who died of leukemia who wanted to make a 1000 cranes and how the paper crane has become the symbol for world peace.
Overall he did a wonderful job. Everyone enjoyed themselves and it was just amazing to watch my son share something he is passionate about with friends at scouts. I’m so proud of my baby boy. He’s growing up into a wonderful and bright young man! He’s amazing to me each and every day!
Joram of course could not be outdone. He insisted on showing his den the story of the boat that turns into a life vest. He also made his whole den paper boats and had so much fun. He’s very enthusiastic!
Both boys are such a delight. Children are wonderful gifts that will bring you satisfaction and amusement all at the same time!
