I won this book from a book review contest. It sounded fun, the title is cute, and I figured I should give it a try. Young Adult fiction can be so much fun.

This book starts with the loss of Erin’s Aunt, something hard for her family to take. You learn a lot about the family dynamics and it makes you think about what lengths people will take to protect those that they love.

The catalyst of the story is a pink crystal ball. Aunt Kiki left a coded letter to teach Erin how to use the ball, and it is fun to watch her work the puzzle through while stumbling across the power of the ball.

Meanwhile, she leans heavily on her friends, a cast of characters like no other. Reminds of the goofy things I would do as a teenager. Lightheartedness in the wake of heavier circumstances. Sometimes it would be nice to go back to the simpler days where real life does not intrude.

I think that’s why I like to read.

This didn’t take long to read and was quite enjoyable. If you are looking for something a little less paranormal from my reading list, this would be the book for you. It speaks to the young woman in us all and to the fanciful whimsy of youth. Read it and leave the cares of today behind.
