Well after mucking about for way too much time, my website blog is transferred to the new wordpress system from movable type. I still have to transfer over the old entries. Though I have manually transferred over September 2001-present. I’m still working on a way to actually get into the old movable type system so I can do the quickie import feature if I can. Gaaah. Stupid movable type.
Check out the changes! Kingdom of Sir Megabyte
Now some of you may be wondering for the change. Here’s just a few reasons.
1. I needed to upgrade movable type. And their information? Very high end technical. Makes my eyes cross to think about it. I’m geeky, but I’m not that geeky.
2. I needed to do something so I could take care of all the script kitties who spam comment. Currently? I can only delete one comment at a time. And when these people put multiple comments in every post? Yeah, you get the picture. Painfully long process. I actually have one entry from the September I believe that has over 60 comments! And yes, they are ALL spam.
3. Movable Type is OK, but I wanted a little more functionality.
4. Sometime in the last week my movable type stopped letting me log in. No, it isn’t like my password got changed or something. I get a weird error. Don’t know if this is from the script kitties pounding or if it ate itself or what. Wish I knew. Hence the statement above about not being able to log in to backup.
5. Since I couldn’t log in to backup I was leery of just doing an update on movable type. This should be pretty obvious.
6. I’d been thinking about possibly changing instead of upgrading.
7. This gave me the kick in the pants to tinker with layout which I was just not doing out of sheer laziness.
So what do I now have that I didn’t have before? Besides being able to get into it?
1. Back to the future! Yup, future posting! So I can set up entries to post themselves so that I don’t have to kick them through. That’s nice if I want to post something like “Merry Christmas from Everyone here at the Kingdom of Sir Megabyte” or “Happy Birthday’s go out to my mum” or whatever else you can think of. Nifty
2. Ability to mass edit comments. Thank gosh! Darn you script kitties!
3. This supposedly fights script kitties from spamming! WOOHOO! It has several ways to do this. Here’s seeing what happens!
4. Multiple categories. Before I could only give one category. Now I can give one entry as many as I see fit. And I can teir the categories Nifty!
5. Allows for private entries. Not sure what I would use this for specifically, but hey, nice to have.
6. Along same lines, I can block certain people from seeing posts. So that’s cool. Pssst, I’m talking about YOU on my blog. No really, would be nice for when that special project comes up like a surprise party or gift or something. 🙂 You can post and everyone but the certain party can see it and so the viewers can be in on the secret!
7. Comment moderation of my own. So I can review before letting something post.
I also like the UI with this much more. It’s really clean, and easy to use. What’s great is this has a robust feature package but is made for newbies. It’s simple but doesn’t sacrifice features to keep it simple.
I’ll definately keep you posted on this.
I do want to give a shout-out to caliban27. He helped me find some things to improve the code and was the one who came up with changing the DIV tag to a strait out TABLE tag. It fixed up something that was making the page hinky in IE. (Though it works in Firefox, go figure.) Thanks man! I did notice there were templates (I went looking for as many ways to figure out this problem as I could find…) had the same issue and did the same thing. Probably why I never thought to change the tag. I feel like emailing them and go “that code sux, use the table tag… see my page.” Yeah I saw a problem and didn’t want it to stay that way so I fixed it. Come on peeps! Maybe it’s just me, I like things to be used by people, not by certain browsers.
In other interesting things today:
We took Grandpa out for lunch today. When we got to his room he wasn’t having a good day. It is so sad to see someone you love who is so intelligent and watch him fade in and out of reality. Today’s story was he was going to a ball game. We think he must have thought he was at a college or something. And that he wasn’t sure what they were building next to him. (It’s a Giant, a grocery store, and just being remodeled.) But he did seem to improve as we had him out. So maybe he just needed someone to get him out of his room today. Talk to him and etc. Get his blood pumping and his synapses firing! Hehehe…
We went to BJ’s today. Yesterday it was Costco. We didn’t really get to look well at Costco. But we are going to spend the next few months comparing the two. So watch for Costco V BJ’s posts. (These are bulk membership warehouse stores.) Why? Because I couldn’t find a good comparison online and figure this will be something interesting to watch. So what I need to know is, what are you interested in knowing about? What I may do is list things like what’s on our receipts and how it works out and etc.
Here’s an example of what I’m thinking about doing:
Hey went to BJ’s today and here’s what I got…
10 lbs of burger meat 93% lean at x/pound total price y.
Kraft mac n cheese… 12 pack at z price, that’s q price individually.
Bakery Pot Pie… x many servings, y price, ate it for dinner. The overall flavour was good but the chicken was dry.
Season 2 of 24 on DVD. Hey great, it was only 45 bucks! THat’s 10 bucks cheaper than Best Buy!
This above is only an example. As of yet, we haven’t purchased anything. What do you think?
I’ve also been packing for the trip. We are heading to NJ tomorrow for the holiday. We’re really looking forward to it. Especially the kids. It’s al they’ve talked about!! HEHE!
I’m not sure what’s going to be going on the next few days. Other than driving tomorrow and Sunday in holiday traffic. I assume turkey on Thursday. After that? No clue and no plans. Maybe we’ll run around like crazy. Maybe we’ll all sit and vegitate. Maybe we’ll play cards or watch movies. Anything goes! I can’t wait to see what happens! 🙂
