You know.. I thought about filling out this ‘quiz’.. and then after I realized what the questions were and sat down and thought about it.. I realized I haven’t met anyone from lj.. hugged anyone from lj.. dated anyone from lj.. etc.. etc..
And then after I realized that there was even one person that I’ve done any of those things with.. I figured.. “what would be the point?”

Posting this here cuz its your latest entry, its about harry potter
Mine, i bought the first 3 in a cheezy paperback boxed set at walmart. I didnt know there was a difference between american and canadian editions (british i guess) until i read your entry. I did think it was stupid seeing all the “harry potter and the sorcerer’s stone” crap all over the place (toys and merchandise for the movie), is that what they call the book in USA?
The publisher for my books is called raincoast books, and they say they are printed in canada. whether or not this means that they are printed exactly as the british ones are, i don’t know, but i can’t see why it would be different… Do the american ones that are different say anything like on the publisher page, that it is modified from the original british version? there’s nothing like that in the books I have, but I also don’t have access to any american versions of the book either to see if anything is different.
The other day I had to replace my 4th book, i just bought a paperback, which cost $15 at walmart.. i’m pretty sure the little boxed set I got was about 30 bucks, and this is all canadian dollars i’m speaking. I don’t know if money is a factor for you, but instead of getting them all in hardcover for that much, why not just get them in paperback, except for book 5? It would probably be cheaper, i’m sure. I love having nice matched sets as well, but I only bought these books in the beginning because I was curious about the whole harry potter phenominon. hehe. I’m upset I can’t find my book 4, which is a hardcover edition, but i’m sure it will turn up eventually!

Just a follow up
I looked up the website of the publishing company, and it does say that their editions do have the original british text. They have a little FAQ on their books:
http://www.raincoast.com/harrypotter/faq.html
Dunno if this info will help you or just make your desisions any harder!! =)

Hey! You are a big help. I’ll dig out the website which gives some examples. Basically they changed the spellings of all the “british” spelled words to the “american” spelling. They changed some words like “Car Park” to “parking lot” to more americanize it. But then they changed WHOLE SENTANCES. Sentances that weren’t really slangy. I mean… I can understand if they maybe want to change some of the slang somewhat. And some terms are different like we say “club” they say “discotech” (Or disco). Whoopededo. This country is so frelling big that we have different slang depending on where you are here so what does it matter? You’ll figure it out, you know?
Anyway… I’ll try to get you the examples. 🙂
Yes in America they were concerned about the kids here understand about “philospher’s” stone and alchemy and other such things which is why they thought to start changing in the first place is the understanding I have. Whatever. If she’s a good writer, then she will explain the purpose of said items and the like and therefore the people will understand it. Of course since I’m such a sci fi and fantasy reader I already knew what such things were. And since JK is such a good writer, I have a feeling she would not have had any trouble at all…
I was a kid and read a LOT of british books and I NEVER had any trouble understanding the different spellings and slang. But I was a bookworm. Of course, now I spell half my words the “british” way and it freaks people here out! HAHA
Anyway… cost is not an HUGE issue. I mean of course it is an issue because I’d like to save some money… but it isn’t like I am going to have to struggle to afford to buy the hardbacks or something. I just hate to put out the money. Does that make sense?
Well I’ve rambled enough… Take care.

Hey, I dont’ have time to go to the website right now, but I do plan to definately check out this website when I get home tonight. I’m interested to see what they say!
From my impression the only country that felt the need to alter the text was the snobby USofA. Geeze… heaven forbid someone be DIFFERENT from us! We’re a bunch of snobs!!! LOL
Thank you EVER so much for the link!
