The movie parade continues.
We just watched Bend it Like Bekham and it was great. This is about an Indian girl living in the UK who wants to play football. (That’s soccor for all you yanks.) Her fundamental parents just want her to find a nice boy, settle down, learn to cook traditional Indian meals, and become a traditional Indian girl. When she meets up with a young blonde british gal who plays soccer and talks her into coming out, much mayhem ensues. It’s hillarious at times but it is also a serious look at letting your children be their own people. We can’t force our dreams and ideals onto our children. We can teach them and raise them well and hope they will do right by the world.
The movie has a little bit of romance, a lot of seriousness, a tale of courage in oneself, and of course lots of sports. I highly recommend it! Especially if you like the sport.

I’ve been wanting to see that ever since I saw a preview last spring. I sadly missed my chance at Film Society cause I instead went to see an anime movie with the cute Indian girl I was crushing on at the time (so, it’s sorta a valid excuse, right?) and I skipped the midnight showing cause we had the CWRUMS play the next day.
I have another friend of Indian descent and he went to see this movie with his mom. He laughed at how the fundamental parents acted but his mom couldn’t figure out what he found was so funny. I think she even got a little annoyed … cause he was laughing at stuff she did too. 😉

A little off topic, but speaking of Indian movies, you should check out a film called Hollywood/Bollywood. I think it is a canadian film so it may be in the foreign films section. (Canadian films are in the foreign film section at blockbuster in canada — isn’t that funny?)
I don’t remember if there is anything bad in it, but i wouldnt watch it with the kids. Its a take-off on real Indian movies, but in Canada, so it has all these musical numbers in it. We were in a weird mood and I saw a preview for it and thought it looked interesting. It was funny.

hehe.. that’s funny.. poor mom
see i watch things that mock my culture and laugh my arse off. That RM movie? Oh my gosh if I wasn’t laughing for 90 minutes strait or whatever. LDS people are too fricking funny. 🙂 Poor woman… hehe
The movie was good. Come visit and you can watch my DVD. 🙂 HEHE The Indian culture is something that I wish we’d see more of. They have some nifty things and it is a very rich heritage. I enjoyed that. But of course some of it was just so funny. The mom lamenting her daughter wanting to play football instead of learning to cook. *SIGH* HEHE
Hope you get to see it.

So you are in Canada and they put it in foreign films?
And people say our society in the “civilized world” is “sane” and whathaveyou. That’s freaking nutso! HAHA I’m telling you “normal” scares me. HEHE.
Hmm.. I’ll have to see if I can locate it. My Blockbuster is rather lame. They get nothing in. You should have seen my shock at them having an LDS movie. And hello… mega LDS history right here in town. Whatever. They get mainstream and not much else. This town is a wasteland. HAHA What do you expect from Westerville, the city that is still proud to say it started the prohibition?

We went ahead and let my kids watch it.
We hadn’t seen it and I heard it would be OK for them. However there were a couple of locker scenes. Girls in bras and shorts. But you know, bikinis show more skin, so that’s a judgement call for you. There was also the use of a few swear words, but it was primarily the s one. Well aside from the british “bollocks” and “bloody”. The swearing was very minor though I was upset that there was any. If you have kids in middle school though, I’ll guarantee they probably hear more swearing at the bus or the mall.
Other than that, I think it would be OK. Younger children aren’t going to understand the story of the clashing between the beliefs and the desires. My kids really just liked the soccer scenes. 🙂
I would rate it over all… probably 6th grade and up if you really want them to get the story. It is rated PG-13. It must be for the locker room bras and the five swear words. I hate ratings. I don’t trust them. I did ask my husband and he said the same… sixth grade and up.
I really didn’t know how full the story was when I got it. I really thought it was just a girl who wanted to play soccer. I didn’t realize all the other storyline stuff that was going to go on. Not that it is “adult” but it is definately a little too thoughtful for younger children. There’s more story line than say… The Big Green. 🙂 Something it takes maturity to understand like the culture of the Indians.
