I want to recommend The Signal. It’s a podcast about the Firefly tv show and upcoming movie.
Firefly aired on FOX who did nothing but abuse it. They chucked the pilot and aired it some time later. They instead started with episode three so viewers were left with a great feeling of “Huh what?” As someone who did view that first episode, I thought “Hmmm, this show seems interesting but really weird, and maybe it will make sense if I keep watching it?” The abuse continued until the show was unceremoniously cancelled without even airing all the first half a season filmed.
Now this show is by the creator of hits Buffy and Angel. You’d think this would have given him some cred for Fox so he wouldn’t be abused, but alas, no. Fox does not care. Why? Because Fox is evil. That’s just my opinion though, take it for what it is worth.
Now this show I liked. It kind of took what we liked about Star Trek, the fact it was a western.. only in space! Only Joss said, “I’m not fooling around… it is going to FEEL like a western and LOOK like a western to boot!” Mal looks like a rebel cowboy in space. He’s got a gun. It’s strapped to his pants in a very obvious way. Half the sets are dusty and ghost towny and the like.
Even better, everything was broken. I swear, everything. In my mind, this is a true view of the future. Don’t get me wrong, Star Trek’s utopia is nice. I’d love for that. But when we first start striking out there, it’s going to be like the wild west, we’re going to have space boats running on winblows blue screening every two and a half seconds, and it just isn’t going to be easy. It’ll be great! Adventurous! But that’s the way it’s going to be!
Unlike other shows that shall remain nameless but is NOT the best show on TV and starts again next week (quick, what’s the hardest liquor possible to drink and get you the drunkest the fastest as I’ll need it to survive aforementioned nameless TV show), Firefly had a GREAT mix of tech with non-tech. Nope, no FTL travel with dot matrix printers and sharpees for this show! It felt real. No super tech with stuff we haven’t seen in 20 years. Amen.
OK, I’m really getting anxious for the movie just writing this post. I can’t wait at all for the movie. Someone, buy me tickets to the next screener? My luck… the screener was here and I was on vacation in Mississippi. Le Sigh.

We tried to get Serenity for its opening night at CWRU’s Film Society… but alas, no show. We aren’t allowed – I guess because we’re not a first run-theater so don’t have the rights. At this school… we probably could have packed the house.
I love that every naysayer’s comments just prove they don’t get it. Why is there old tech in space? Um, because new tech is expensive. Horses are self-replicating machines that are fueled by other self-replicating machines that grow from average soil. Probably a lot cheaper than a land-speeder (How the heck did Luke afford that?)
Which is another thing; as high tech as Star Wars is, somoene pointed out that every faction uses riding animals – even the uber tech savy and wealthy Empire.

Alas that not being a first run theatre! Oh well, maybe you can get group rates at the local theatre? Best of luck! I know I”m gonna be there. I wonder if they will open it at midnight. I might just have to show for that if they do. I’ve heard so much about it from the stars… AUGHHHH must see must see!!!
See in Firefly the old tech in space works. I don’t know how come some shows can make this work and others can’t. Joss did spectacular. Anyone who wants to mix old tech with new tech and make it believable should be forced to watched Firefly so they may learn from the master, Joss!
GOod point, how did luke afford that land speeder. Perhaps they were not growing what we thought they were growing š Just what WAS in that back 40, eh Uncle?
Hmmm, good point also on the riding animals. š Woot! š

Well, Han was a drug smuggler and the Hutt fortunes are heavily into drugs. Who knows how ingrained that industry was on Tatooine. Maybe “moisture farming” was just a front. š
I guess though if a slave boy can build a pod-racer, Luke could find an old speeder. Did I show you the “Obi-wan shops for a car” clip?

Hehe, I have a feeling there was some drug money in the Skywalker past. It would explain a few things about Luke, now wouldn’t it? Or maybe… none of the six movies happened and they were one wild trip Luke had out in the aforementioned back 40! Luke was sampling some of the product… Hey come on, have you seen George Lucas in Love? *GRINS*
And yeah this is true. Luke probably rebuilt that speeder. He seemed pretty handy himself.
No, haven’t seen the Obi-wan shopping for a car. I can see it now though!!
