I was telling Sir Megabyte tonight that I wanted to take a photography course so I could learn to be a lot better. I want to learn how to do things properly. In case you are wondering, we were killing time and were in the camera store. We were drooling over this huge 500mm lens. Oh my goodness.. *DROOL* Want…. want… I noticed they now have two 40.5 filters. Yay! Two that I actually wanted. The UV one and then the circular polarizer one that helps with truer colours outside. That means if I can figure out a third one in the 40.5 size, I can get it for free. That’s the deal. Buy two, third is free. However apparently 40.5 is a bizarre size.
They have this thing available for my camera listed at Olympus’s website. But it doesn’t say what it steps the thread size up to. Why don’t they give these details? It’s called the CLA-7. It just says that you use it to put on the olympus lenses. But it doesn’t give any other information. So it isn’t really for filters. But I don’t want to buy this 40 dollar adapter thing if I can’t use any other lenses. The two lenses they list are both 300 smackers. Hello OUCH? I don’t want to get it if it only works with those two lenses.
I think I should have done a little more researching before buying this camera. Even if it was the number 1 pick by PC World. Of course that’s just because the stores here don’t seem to carry many Olympus. Figures, eh? But I can’t seem to find something to step up my 40.5 to a more standard size for filters. Wish I understood this stuff more. I mean I have a basic knowledge to function, but I am just finding myself lacking too much knowledge.
Well so far the only thing I’ve found at the local community college was a non credit class for 150 bucks for 35mm. Except I don’t have a 35mm and I don’t know that 150 is a good price to pay for a four week course that you then get no credit for. I didn’t even know you could take no credit classes. What’s the point of a no credit class? I mean this would make for a wonderful elective for when I do finish up my degree. I’m trying to see what else I can find.
Maybe I just need a photography club. Of course don’t know of any of those either. I wonder if Nancy is really going to give me her books. I’ve tried to catch up with her but she’s always busy when I go over. I’m not sure how long she’s going to be up here. But I’d love to at least pick her brain on ways to improve my photography and understanding my camera more!!
So anyway… that was my evening. Oh we ate dinner at this wonderful restaurant we discovered by Ritz! It’s hidden so I don’t think many people go. It was dead when we were there and it was prime supper time! But ummmmmm… yeah well it was great! Great Italian, not that no spices Olive Garden stuff. And it was very cute. Inside it is decorated like it is on a street in Italy.
I’m going back to looking up more photography stuff.

I want a telephoto zoom lens. The same one should work on both my camera and camcorder. But they are so pricey!!!

I don’t fool myself, I’m not a great photographer, but I like to think that I do well enough. But I just love photography, I’m sure that was pretty blatant! HEHE Given the sheer amount of pictures I take. The sad thing is that I actually don’t take that many more pictures now that I have digital. One of hte reasons we wanted digital… save $$ on processing! HAHA.
I hear ya… I’d definately like a telephoto lens as well. Le Sigh… mega bucks.

I’ve also been complimented. I was going to try to enter this Ritz Camera photo contest till I saw last year’s winner. No farking way. I know I’m not that good. You’ve seen my pictures… they are OK but not stunning.
I love having digital as well. And you are right, they quickly pay for themselves! I love being able to see if a picture turns out. I love having the ability to edit photos so they look right before printing. And I love being able to print at home (though I do a lot of printing at the lab as well).
*SIGH* I do need to find some way to do more photography and to properly learn. Unfortunately, it is a lot harder now. *SIGH*
I was kind of hurt two weeks ago in NJ. I offered to take a nice portrait of my SIL and her family because they hadn’t had one in so long. It would have allowed for them to print what they wanted and also I could have given a copy strait to my FIL and Step-MIL who only have the old portrait that brought up the comment that they needed a new one taken. She just turned me down. I know she probably didn’t mean anything by it, but it still made me sad. Probably because I just always feel inadequate around the family anyway.

The comm college class is probably just adult ed. Most schools have a bunch of these that people can take, pretty much just for fun and your own desires. I too, would LOVE to take a photography class, but the stupid comm colleges around here don’t offer it, and at UofL you have to take a PREREQUISITE to take photography. HAHA! RIGHT.
I know there is an online course that is supposed to be REALLY good but it’s REALLY expensive. I can’t think of who it is now.

I don’t understand why they offer this at the community college for no credit. If you want to take something for “fun” then you audit the course. then you only pay like 30 bucks. You go to the course, you do everything like everyone else, but in the end you don’t get credit. I don’t want to pay 150 bucks to go to a class and then not get credit. If I want to do something for fun and my own desires I’ll go to someplace geared towards that, like Wilton Cake Decorating at Micheal’s.
The two they offer don’t look quite like what I’m looking for. The 150 dollar one is a start but then I’d need a 35mm camera and I definately can’t afford to go and buy one. If Grandma would give me Granddad’s, awesome…
Looks like I have to wait until next summer though because if I want to take classes I will end up in Woodbridge at NOVA. It is almost 200 bucks a credit hour for non residents. Ouch. But once I have residency it is only 70 bucks a credit hour. Woohoo! Just wish they reached out to here. I’m going to have to see what they offer for distance learning as well so maybe I can take some classes from afar. But they at least offer journalism and stuff too. I still have a dream of finishing up my college. If I can only afford one class a semester, so be it. I guess we’ll see what our $$ looks like next year. 🙂
So for now photography classes unless i can find some local ones that are decent are out. I’ll have to ask in my Ritz if they know what I can do. They may even know of a club. 🙂

Digital Photography class, 2 days for 3 hours each, $79.
Still no credit, but it’s not super spendy, and you’d get what you want.
If the school doesn’t offer a program that includes this class, which this one doesn’t, they sometimes offer adult ed classes. Basically the instructor pockets most of the money, so it’s like taking Wilton at Michaels except it’s at the school instead. There are no credits given, because the school doesn’t support that class for their programs, basically.

But reading the specs it doesn’t look like what I want. I want something more akin to the 35 mm class that was going to be 150 bucks. Well it was like 130 but you figure after any fees it would creep its way up to 150. It discusses actual photography. Lighting and etc.
This digital class appears to be mostly stuff I already get. I know how to touch up photos. I know how to send photos. Special effects might be nice but is this basically the stuff I already do in photoshop? My husband looked at the course and didn’t think it was right either. That’s why we were leaning towards the more expensive 35mm one. Of course then you run into that lack of a 35mm camera.
