Not that I have that much planned for today but I woke up with Manic Monday by the Bangles stuck in my head. “It’s just another manic monday, I wish it was Sunday, oh that’s my fun day..”
Maybe because like they say “Six o clock all ready, I was just in the middle of a dream…” My kids woke me up from a deep slumber that was ever so nice with screaming and yelling… Argh.
On the books for today is to visit with a friend who is coming over. So far as I know, that is all.
I think I’m going to get dressed and then maniacally read my book. I have finished my two Dan Brown addictive books. (Beware Dan Brown. He’s one of those evil writers who sucks you into his books so you cannot accomplish anything until you figure things out!!) They were Digital Fortress and Deception Point and I loved them. Wowsers! Sir Megabyte had just read them and so we actually got to talk about books. That was cool. Almost like having book group… almost! Well Saturday night I was really tired, but I went ahead and started my new book. It’s by an author I’ve never read before, Karin Slaughter. How fitting it is a murder mystery with that last name! At any rate, this book is entitled Blindsighted, and it was a recommend from my old book store that I loved so much in Westerville. Must I say that the highly recommended book is proving to live up to the hype. I really was tired but managed to stay away for about 25 pages Saturday night before falling asleep. Yesterday I woke up and since it was like 7:30 I decided to read a little more. Next thing I knew it was 10:30 AM and my mum was knocking on the door asking if we were going to Church! Eeeek…
I’m now on page 281. I have several conclusions I’ve come to. One is being investigated now. They just revelaed that something I had a question about did actually happen so they are looking into that. I tell you what, this book rocks. Get it. Read it. Love it. Oh and warn me so I know why you drop off the radar for a few days. I have just under 100 pages to go. You know what, I hope i have another book like this in my stacks, I’m really in the mood for this kind of intensity. I know I’ve read several other intense books but I guess the cycle for me is on that. I know I have some more lightweight ones for when I come off of that…
OK enough jabbering. Feel loved and special because I shared info on this book with you instead of just hiding and reading it more… I want to get back into it!!

Have you read Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, then? They are turning Da Vinci code into a movie with Russell Crowe possibly starring.

I haven’t read Da Vinci since it STILL has not been released to paperback. *GRUMBLE GROWL*
I think it is poor that Da Vinci got so much hype. Angels and Demons came before it. I heard that they are making DV into a flick though. At the rate the thing is going I’ll probably see the movie before that darned book is in paperback!!!

Well, it was a good book, for the thriller, Dirk Pitt, Jack Ryan school of action heroes. I enjoyed it. Interesting premise that stirred up a lot of controversy, which is always good for us writers. We want people to pay attention to what we’re doing.

I really enjoyed Angels and Demons. I’m thinking I might just break down and get Da Vinci since my husband REALLy enjoyed the other three DB books. I mean I know I’ll read it and he’ll read it and I probably have a couple of friends i could pass it around to so the expense would be OK. I just have a hard time with hard covers. I mean they cost so bloody much anymore for just a paperback…
Maybe I’ll pick it up after Dragon Con. Right now the bulk of my book discretionary money is going towards books to take to be autographed. I need a Margaret Weiss, a Tracey Hickman, an Anne McCaffrey, and a Peter David. I’d have an easier time if my books weren’t in bloody storage! I know the ones I want for several of these people and I own them… in storage. Blargh!

Well, $25 for a hardback is pretty steep. There’s been only one hardback book i’ve wanted to get in the last year, and that was Ilium by Dan Simmons, i didn’t even buy it; i keep waiting for the paperback. I’ll probably buy Feast of Crows when it comes out and Jordan’s next magnum waitus, but that’s about the extent of my hardback buying.

the only hardbacks I’ve been buying that are not on the deep discount shelf (because hey, I’ll buy it if it is five bucks or something) have been the Left Behind books. But most everything else I generally wait. Other than that? It’s the discount ones.
I just hate the cost… it used to be a paperback was like five bucks and a hardback was maybe 20. Now paperbacks run from 8-12 and hardbacks are like 25-30. UGH!!!!!

Goeth forth, child, and buyeth at Costco and Sam’s Club. Prospereth and gain wisdom.
The only problem with that, is they only sell the latest beach blanket, Danielle Steel, Sue Grafton, least common denominator book. You have to go to Barnes and Noble or Borders to get that dare to be great, i want this book, book. Like this book called Fat White Vampire Blues i’ve been trying to find. Can’t find it anywhere. Have to special order it. It’s supposed to be really good.
There was a movement afoot for publisher’s to stop putting their prices on their books by the book retailer’s association but they were fighting it. The chains want to charge whatever they want to charge, and not be handcuffed by the price printed on the cover. Ergo, an 8.99 paperback that isn’t selling, turns into a 4.49 paperback without a 50% off sticker slapped on it.

You know, I’ve never been to Costco. My mum and I were talking about how now that we are a six/seven member family (depending on if you count gramps or not) we really need to investigate this whole thing..
Barf Danielle Steel. And Sue Grafton did not impress me much. I read one of her books and the farking mystery didn’t tell you whodunit. What kind of loser mystery doesn’t tell you whodunit? It ended and it could be one of three freaking people. AUGHHH! That was the first and hopefully last Sue Grafton experience for me.
OK, now i want Fat White Vampire Blues. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but with that title??? Come on!! I once bought a book based on its cover. It was called Bimbos of the Death Sun and had a computer geek sitting at his desk with a bikini bimbo draped over his desk and computer. This book proved to be more than excellent. So hopefully Fat White Vampire Blues would be as well… 😉
Hmmm… I can see the benefit of not putting prices on books but then again you would be stuck having to label ALL books then. That would suck. I hate stickers.
Well my book I’m reading is getting more interesting (finally) now that we are getting into this weirdo historical stuff. So I’m happy. Haven’t decided if I shall read the sequel yet or not… *Shrug* Probably will because it isn’t like I don’t have time on my hands… haha Tomorrow’s plans got dumped as well due to my Aunt being ill.

Here’s the cover blurb on that book:
Vampire, nosferatu, creature of the night?whatever you call him?Jules Duchon has lived (so to speak) in New Orleans far longer than there have been drunk coeds on Bourbon Street. Weighing in at a whopping four hundred and fifty pounds, swelled up on the sweet, rich blood of people who consume the fattiest diet in the world, Jules is thankful he can?t see his reflection in a mirror. When he turns into a bat, he can?t get his big ol? butt off the ground.
What?s worse, after more than a century of being undead, he?s watched his neighborhood truly go to hell?and now, a new vampire is looking to drive him out altogether. See, Jules had always been an equal opportunity kind of vampire. And while he would admit that the blood of a black woman is sweeter than the blood of a white man, Jules never drank more than his fair share of either. Enter Malice X . Young, cocky, and black, Malice warns Jules that his days of feasting on sisters and brothers are over. He tells Jules he?d better confine himself to white victims?or else face the consequences. And then, just to prove he isn?t kidding, Malice burns Jules?s house to the ground.
With the help of Maureen, the morbidly obese, stripper-vampire who made him, and Doodlebug, an undead cross-dresser who (literally) flies in from the coast? Jules must find a way to contend with the hurdles that life throws at him . . . without getting a stake through the heart. It?s enough to give a man the blues.
Now how could you not want to read that? Now Bride of the Fat White Vampire is out. Alas, Borders and B&N don’t carry it here. I”ll have to order both when i’m through

I hear ya. Seems like everyone wants to throw in their hat and so they write something that has already been done. Nice to see some fun stuff.
Have you read Sharon McCrumb’s Zombies of the I forget what (sorry I think it is gene pool) and Bimbos of the Death Sun? Great ones… HEHEHE Though they really little more than farces… they are rather fun. I am currently enjoying the Southern Vampire series of romancey mysteries… vamps have outed themselves. Yeah that’s right, they came out of the coffin. And the main character is involved with a vamp and she can read people’s minds. And her boss is a shapeshifter. Not werewolves, they run in packs and take great offense when others take on “were” to themselves. I’m waiting anxiously for the next one. Meanwhile I’m reading this weird time series. A middle aged librarian in the great white north just found out she can walk through the “wasteland” and travel in time and fight curses that want to eat people or something. Odd. Kind of slow to get started but I’m halfway through book 2 and really into the story. 🙂
Not that I don’t enjoy stargate or star trek.. but something a little different is always good!

Well, i started reading the Anita Blake vampire books and got burned out on those, though they were good. And i’ve got some Chritopher Golden stuff that looks interesting. And i did read Charlene Harris’ Living Dead in Dallas, which was interesting. Redneck vampires, funny.

Oh see, you totally missed the other Southern Vamps… The latest one was awesome. It’s still in hardcover but my mum bought it anyway. She’s read it at least three times in the last two months. There are actually two more after the Dallas one which was the second we knew about but apparently there’s one she wrote a while ago that looks like it might have started things off, but it didn’t have Sookie.
Chris Golden is good. I’ve got an autographed copy of Immortal (BtVS book) and it was great. Well except he had Buffy’s mum get up out of bed just after having part of her lung removed which is NOT possible. Argh… I know too much. She’d have still had a big fat tube sucking out gunk. *Shudder* Aquarium room…. aughhh pardon me while I quake with flashbacks.
I never did get the Anita Blake books though somewhere in the back of my mind I have them down for when I get through the rest of my giant reading list to give Blake a whirl.
The weirdo time ones are Out of Time, Behind Time, and Taking Time by Lynn Abbey. I’m about halfway through Taking Time now. I’ve read the other two this week. Give them a whirl as it is definately interesting. Now that you know what is going on the books are more enjoyable.. the writer just took her sweet time meandering in the first book to get you *there* with the character.

You might be too young to read those Anita Blake books. They are very graphic and chock full of Rated R content. heh he.
After i finish the War of the Flowers, White Wolf, Chindi, Red Thunder, Wasteland of Flint, and 30 other things, i’ll look into it.

Yeah, i should be banned from every bookstore. It’s a sickness really. I got halfway through White Wolf last night, so maybe it’s not a total waste of time. I love David Gemmell. He’s the working man’s version of George R.R. Martin. No fluff. Just a story, an anti-hero, bad guys, blood, swords, fighting and a little magic, sometimes. No useless exposition, a la Jordan, no wandering storylines, a la Jordan, no 10,000 characters a la Jordan and Martin, no cliched fantasy, a la Brooks and Feist. Just a simple story. Quickly paced.

Yeah I should be banned from bookstores as well. I do major damage to our checking account in bookstores.
At least in Ohio I had the 2nd best library system… no kidding… they were ranked number 2 for a city that size in the nation. It was remarkable. So I only bought books i really wanted. Here the library is a small town library because they haven’t figured out that they aren’t still 25k people… you gotta count the other 200k people who use that library!! LOL. So it is pretty much… yeah the bookstore.
So that story sounds nice. Glad that it’s just a story and not all longwinded and yadda yadda.

You should give him a try if you ever decide you want some heroic fantasy. Yeah, our library here is pretty small and doesn’t get that much funding. They get more books by people donating them, then buying them. But, usually, anything popular, they’ll have a few of, like Grisham, Clancy, Danielle Steele (shiver) or whatever else is floating around, But you have to get on the waiting list.

I’ve never lived anywhere where you could donate books to the library. Now been to plenty of library rummage sales where they sell their old books (Hey we have The Ogre Downstairs that way!) but never any taking books.
