Yay for 5 second photoshop jobs! Hehe. I love those. But let’s be honest… Do we ever do anything that takes MORE than 5 seconds? Haha, nerp!
I really like the original photo as well. Good job. My favorite is whith the house as black and white.

That take less than five seconds. That’s why I was struggling with what to do with my picture of my FIL and all his grandsons. It was taking too long.
Thank you! 🙂 I actually didn’t like the black and white house as much. I thought it looked goofy. Oh and that’s actually a church… it’s predates the civil war. If I’m not mistaken it predates the revolutionary war. I don’t recall that one for sure though.

Why is there a star on the building?

The stars are for support
Between the quakes and the wars and 400 years, the building structure has weakened. There are several buildings through out our town that made use of these large stars to cover where the buildings were damaged by the aforementioned events and to lend structural support.
You can see four in this picture.
I can’t remember when the stars were put up. I’ll have to do some research.

Interesting… So, if they lend structural support, I assume they’re not merely painted on – what are they made of?

Not that I’m an expert, but from what I’ve seen of historical sites and stuff, it does look like it is from the 1700s. But yeah… Really not an expert.
Hmmmm… I’m interested now, lol. How on earth did you manage to do that in more than 5 seconds? I only know my way of doing it, and it’s not like it’s a crappy way or anything… But that is where I just have one layer on luminosity and then erase around it. Then I get exactly what you got on those pictures. So please explain!! Be my tutor, hehe. 🙂
Oh, no! Gmail had issues this morning!

No they aren’t painted on. Next time I have my camera and am by one of the buildings I’ll take a close up of one of the stars for you. Stars are big in this town. Our paper is the Free Lance Star as well. 🙂
I’m not sure of the actual makeup of the stars. I know they are metal so I’m assuming iron/steel/something or other. They’ve been up for AGES so it isn’t anything real modern.
I tried a google search but unfortunately I get mostly FLS stuff… darned paper. HAHA So I’ll shoot a friend of mine who works for the historical society an email and ask her for more details on the stars.
It is very overcast and rainy so I don’t know if I’ll take a picture of one of the stars today. The weather is just so poor I don’t know if I’ll be able to traipse through the graveyard and all to get to the building. Send me 250 bucks and Ill buy that telephoto lens… hahaha just kidding. I’ll see what I can do for you though.

Not gmail issues! EEEK… sorry this struck me hard…
I don’t know the actual date of the original Salem Church. I want to say it was one of the first in the growing county/town though. Our town is very old. George Washington grew up here. (Yup, chopped down that cherry tree here.. haha)
The oldest thing I can remember hearing about something happening in that church is people taking refuge during the civil war. There was a battle right there. If you ever come to visit, you’ll notice there were battles pretty much everywhere, here. We are halfway between DC and Richmond so the troops just seemed to meet up here. There are more battles than I can count.. HAHA I think it is why only the “rednecks” are all into that southern pride stuff. The rest of us were like “No way, that just means we get torched over and over!” And 140 years later the school children are tortured with civil war history every year in school. LOL
