Don’t ask me why the heck Ohio does this. As if we don’t pay enough taxes? And can they make it easy? No. And then of course Sir Megabyte’s last job messed up and sent our tax money off to the wrong city. Even though we have that city’s address we are technically in another city’s tax district. And don’t ask me how that relates to schools getting the money since the city we pay taxes to is not the city schools we use.
I hate tax season every year because I have to fill out THREE forms. Federal, state, and city. Argh. Life was easier before we moved to Ohio!
Anyway, I decided not to mess with it. I went to HR Block and made them do my city taxes. I only owe 55 bucks. Not so bad. Thank goodness!

City Income taxes do not pay for schooling.. Schools are paid for in ohio through property tax. (unless your school was lucky enough to pass a income tax levy) which is pretty rare. City Income taxes pay for police, road maintanence, leaf collection.. etc etc.. anything your city decides to do with the money.. in the northern part of ohio.. the city even pays for snow removal.
I hate City taxes.. but for a different reason… I hate the fact that the city I work in.. Medina… doesn’t share with the city I work in.. so I’m paying 2 different cities two different tax rates.. why? because I work in one city.. and live in another.
So I filled out 2 City tax forms this year.. not sure I did them right either.. City tax forms are way too confusing.

They are stupid
No other state I’ve lived in has had an city income tax. And I agree, it is dumb that cities don’t talk to each other. We used to live up in Ashland and my husband worked in Mansfield. The first year we were there they didn’t take anything out. So it was April 14th and I found out about crazy city income tax and had to jump through a thousand hoops to figure out what to do and then of course i had to pay. So my husband went in and had his boss take out money for it but it went to Mansfield where as we had to pay Ashland so then we had to fill out a form to get a return from Mansfield and pay to Ashland. Plus the cities had different rates so it wasn’t even eqaul.
We pay property tax to the same city we pay income tax too. So our money is definately not going to where our school district is. So once more, questioning how that works out.
Also, our neighbourhood doesn’t get plowed. Apparently we aren’t on the city map for plowing even though we have been here for three years. Just how long does it take to get on the map? That bad snow storm in February? A bus fishtailed and went onto the sidewalk because all the other streets were cleared. Someone from our HOA finally paid some guy to plow our street.
Oh yeah we don’t get leaf collection here either. And the roads suck. And what’s with this not keeping up sidewalks like in other states? Where on earth does our money go? I pay a crapload of taxes in this state and I don’t see stuff that other states get without the crapload of taxes.
My biggest gripe about the school system is this mandatory walking BS. No. Every kid gets a bus. ESPECIALLY elementary school kids. EVERY kid gets a bus. Other states do it why can’t Ohio which feels like they need to tax us within an inch of our lives?
Can you tell how much this bugs me? HAHA
