The book reads fast. It really is a picture book. I just don’t know that I’d read it to a pre-schooler, unless of course that pre-schooler is Wednesday Adams. This is the perfect book for reading on the fly: At the dentist, the doctor’s office waiting room, soccer practice for little Timmy. Hmmm, why did I make all those places public? Well, you get the idea.
The story is timeless. It’s a boy and his cat. Almost as timeless as a boy and his dog. Only better. Because it’s a cat. And has zombies. Everything is better with cats and zombies.
Jake loves his little fur ball and doesn’t want to ride out the zombie apocalypse alone. Does anyone? You really feel for him as he watches Tiddles slowly decay as zombie-ism takes hold. You want to cry with him, because you absolutely relate to his reticence to turn Tiddles out. Could any of us be so cruel? You empathize with his fear that perhaps Tiddles might just go all zombie on Jake, making him lunch. It’s every zombie cat for his/her furry self, you know.
The artwork is a little macabre at times, Tiddles is a zombie cat after all. It is nothing terribly graphic or stomach turning or fear inducing for an adult. Again, I probably wouldn’t take this to a Kindergarten story time or anything. Well, maybe I would, but I also wear skull skirts.
If you are looking for something meaty and long, this isn’t it. You’ll end up with enough flesh for your vaguely cannibalistic hunger from the zombie plague, but this isn’t The Walking Dead graphic novels. This is a little more tragic than the Zombie Night before Christmas. (How can anything with Santa be tragic?) I would rate this with The Zombie Driven Life. Only shorter and with actual art.
Zombie lover? You must pick this one up. Never fear, it’s in my survival library, and you know Lady Ozma’s got the Hello Kitty AK-47 locked and loaded in event of the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse.
